BTCC Round 6 | Snetterton | 28th & 29th July

A weekend of bad luck and retirements for Rory

BTCC Round 6ย | Snetterton | 28th & 29th July

The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship kicked back into action for Round 6 after the summer break. We had high hopes for a strong points haul however our luck took a turn for the worst, much like the weather.

This weekend was a bit more special as Snetterton played host to the BTCCโ€™s 60th anniversary Diamond Double celebrations. We had an extra long Race 3 with an additional qualifying session to determine the grid for this race.

I qualified P19 for Race 1 and P21 for the Diamond Double Race 3. Not ideal but we have shown we can race up the field come Sunday.

All the drivers took part in a photo shoot on the Saturday night and then a BBQ where the fans joined us. I got speaking to a very depressed Jason Plato who is having a troublesome season in the Subaru Lavorge. He reminisced of his time in the MG, sounding pretty proud of what they achieved with the car over the years. Heโ€™s one driver Iโ€™ve never really spoken to, only ever seen him as one of the big BTCC personalities, so it was pretty cool to just chew the fat with him.

The weather changed overnight to thunder storms, high winds and heavy rain so raceday was all to play for. But it just wasnโ€™t to be our day. I had to retire from Race 1 as my MG 6 GT ground to a hault with an alternator failure after I had battled through to P9. In Race 2 I was forced to pit with high engine temperatures because of the intercooler intake collapsing following a bump early in the race. I hadn’t even got to turn 2 before I was sandwiched between two cars and spun around in Race 3. All in all, it was a tough weekend!

Motorsport is up and down with the BTCC feeling like a rollercoaster. One minute itโ€™s going your way and the next you’reย at rock bottom. Itโ€™s part of why I love the sport and itโ€™s important to learn from these tough race weekends and then quickly move on. Rockingham Motor Speedway is next up and Iโ€™m feeling much more positive.
