British Touring Car Championship
Silverstone 16th - 17th September
The British Touring Car Championship is high adrenaline, action packed stuff, with every single lap providing new challenges to overcome. My Silverstone BTCC weekend was certainly all of the above and it was an event where the results really didn't show the potential we had as a team!
Qualifying was down to the wire as always with just 0.7 sec covering the whole field of 32 cars. My lap was just 0.3 of a second off pole, good enough for 14th and the highest placed Ford Focus in the field.
The races were all very similar, as I found myself progressing up the field with some touringcaresque overtaking, only to drop down the order after being bashed off the road.
Admittedly, some incidents I take responsibility for but overall the racing was really rough at the weekend.
I finished races one and two as the highest placed Ford, albeit down in 20th and 19th respectively. Then in race 3, I made some good progress up the field and was on the verge of breaking into the top ten, before going wheel to wheel with the MG of Aron Smith leaving my car with broken steering. I was forced to pit the car as it was completely undriveable which was really disappointing as the team really deserved a result!
The silver lining from Silverstone was that the #6 Focus and I had the pace to catch and pass the cars ahead of me and I made some nice little moves in each race. A real highlight was setting the 5th quickest lap time in race 2. The real bummer is that I never managed to convert this speed into a result for the Shredded Wheat racing with Duo squad.
I approached the weekend with the goal of stamping my authority in the races and at times I did, however there’s a balance to be had at Brands Hatch in two weeks time in order to finish up the field.
It’s not been the smoothest couple of races, but I’m looking forward to the BTCC finale at Brands Hatch. I’m confident I can piece together everything I’ve learned and bring home the bacon!
