Silverston 9 - 11 March 2018
It’s been a busy off season with Joy and I giving birth to our baby boy, Parker James Butcher. What an amazing few months it’s been, and tiring too. But, all worth it, as we start to see him smile and tell stories. Already got his first race suit looked up!
In between changing nappies and feeds at god knows what hour, I’ve been working busily to finalise my plans. Last weekend I enjoyed my first race of 2018. I took on the Silverstone 24 Hours with JW Bird Motorsport aboard their 2018 spec VW Golf TCR and I was joined by Kieran Griffin, Paul Dehadray and William Paul.
What is TCR? TCR is a new touring car category which has taken motorsport by storm. It is a common regulation used by many national and international series, including the World Touring Car Championship which has adopted the rules for 2018. This means that the VW Golf I raced in at the weekend would be eligible to compete in a huge amount of different championships. This is what makes it so attractive to teams and drivers.
The Silverstone race was the first outing for the brand-new Golf TCR, we were learning at every step. After qualifying the car on the front row and leading the race for the first 2 hours, we hit a few problems. Two rear wheel bearing failures overtime dropped us down the order. Despite overcoming near freezing conditions and severe fog we could only secure 7th overall in the TCR category.
The race was paused at 2am on Sunday morning because the conditions were too dangerous. Seeing where you’re going while driving at high speed is overrated, but it was definitely the right call.
Racing resumed at 6am and we made it to the finish (10.30am) with the car in one piece, which is one hell of an achievement on its first ever race.
All in all, a great experience, and I managed a good seat time in challenging conditions. No better way to prepare myself for the year ahead. I hope to join the JWB Motorsport crew at events later in the season.
My full 2018 schedule will be announced in the coming days and I can’t wait to tell you all about it!
